Movie Review: The Kite Runner

The Official Movie Poster

The tragic book The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini has just been turned into a full length motion picture.  The movie begins as a man named Amir receives a phone call from his old friend telling him to return to his home in Pakistan because “There is a way to be good again.” Then the movie takes a look back in his life through the eyes of his childhood self.  After that, the story takes a horrible twist when Amir’s best friend and soon to be told; his brother was raped by an insane child trying to teach Amir’s best friend a lesson.  Amir saw this gruesome act, but did noting about it.  The friend of Amir then leaves Amir’s house where he served as a servant to him.  Much later in the movie when Amir and his father go to America, to seek refuge from the Taliban infested Pakistan the main character finds himself falling in love with a beautiful young women named Sorya.  The two proceed to be married and go on to live happily ever after. That is until the story catches up to the first scene where Amir receives a message from Rahim Khan, his old friend.  When he receives the message Amir returns to Pakistan, only to find that his brother Hassan is dead, but he had a son and in order to make up for what Amir did to his brother he must return to Kabul, the place of his childhood which is now barren and crawling with the Taliban.  Amir manages to rescue his nephew and return to America.  The movie is filled with a few more twists and surprises but it is a great movie.  It left a few things out of the movie that was in the book, but still stayed true to the plot.  In my professional opinion the movie receives 4 out of 5.  -Royan

Traveling in Afghanistan

Visitors come to Afghanistan for several reasons.  Some want to assist our country with diplomacy or by volunteering and offering their abilities. Others, however, just want to come explore our history and sights.

The easiest way to get to Afghanistan is to fly.  We have one major airport in Kabul.  A flight from the United States will cost between $2730 and $3315 for a single adult ticket.  One of the easiest ways to travel around once in Afghanistan is by cab.  Try to stay in major cities which are relatively safe.  Hotels and motels vary greatly in price and quality.  Some may be dirty and very poorly kept, while others may be nicer-being clean, offering toiletries and other things like that.

While in the country sample the food, it is not for everybody though, and may upset some people’s stomachs.  Food poisoning however is very unlikely to happen.  When eating, avoid using the left hand, as this hand is used for the toilet.  Using the left hand will spoil the meal, and it will be thrown out.  If invited for tea at someone’s house, it is customary to bring a small gift (no alcohol though), and do not make a big deal about it.  Simply place it where you sit.  When walking on the street, eye contact should be avoided as much as possible as it is improper, and a man should never make eye contact with a woman.  And with that, avoid conversation on the street with people you do not know.  Afghanistan can be an enjoyable place to visit.  -Qasim

Traditional Afghani Music

kaboucove.jpg.jpg

While Afghanistan has many popular types of music like hip-hop, classical or traditional Afghan music still remains as one of the favorites among the people. The classical form of music in Afghanistan is called klasik. This form of music consists both of musical instruments and vocalists. Many classical musicians have learned the music in India and have come back to their homeland to play it. This style of music is usually based upon percussive instruments such as the tabla, dayra, and the dohol. There are many famous classical vocalists. Among these are the most famous such as Mohammad Hussain Sarahang and Ustad Nato. Although classical Afghani music is often based off of the percussion, the most popular instrument that is played is the rubab. A rubab is a lute like instrument that some consider the national instrument of Afghanistan. Although the Taliban had banned the playing of classical Afghani music, the people of Afghanistan still play the music that their country is best known for.  -Rafi
