wm1b04_lamb_kabob_e.jpg.jpg

If you are looking for a world famous kabob, this is it! Lamb is marinaded in a spicy blend of herbs, creating a flavorful lamb kabob.

Serves 8.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 2 lbs lamb fillet, cut into 1 inch cubes
  • 2 green peppers
  • 2 pints cherry tomatoes
  • 2 onions
  • ---------------------------------------------------------------
  • For the marinade:
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric (or more if desired, depending on how spicy you desire)
  • pinch of ground red pepper or cayenne

PREPARATION:

Up to 24 hours prior to grilling, combine marinade ingredients and pour into freezer bag. Place lamb cubes in marinade and refrigerate until ready to grill. Be sure all pieces of lamb are covered with marinade.

Prepare vegetables.

Wash and dry veggies. Cut green peppers and onions into 1 inch chunks. Set aside.

Prepare skewers by spraying a light coat of cooking oil to prevent sticking. Place lamb and vegetables on skewers. Grill spicy lamb kebabs for about 5-7 minutes on each side or until desired doneness. Serve with hummus, baba ghannouj, or turkish cacik, a cucumber yogurt sauce for dipping

Soroya's Advice Column

Dear Soroya, I am thinking about adopting a child, but I am not sure whether or not it’s the right thing for me to do. Do you think I should? (From Anonymous)

You should adopt after consulting this matter with your local family. Adoption is a big choice, and you should make sure everyone will back you up if you do adopt. Figure out everything before you make that big of a decision.

Dear Soroya, my brother wants to travel back to our homeland of Afghanistan. As you know, the country has been littered with chaos for a long time, and I’m afraid he will get hurt. Should I tell him? (From Giles)

Yes, I would tell him about your worries, but you have to remember this is his choice in the end. If he does end up going, wish him luck!

Dear Soroya, I hate my life. I have a terrible job, terrible family, and terrible husband. I’m not sure if I can handle life anymore. I already know the answer you will say, but do you think I should end it?

Of course not, you can always start over. Get a divorce, find a new job, move away, anything. If life is going bad for you, never just end it, try to figure out how to fix it.

Afghan Adoptions: Help the Children!

Afghanistan has been in a civil war for many years. Corruption, poverty, and famine has spread through out the country. Because most of the men have left to support the Taliban and to fight in the war, many women have no choice but to give their children up to orphanages. Most times giving up their child or children gives them a better chance to survive than keeping them. Orphanages are more common in Afghanistan than McDonalds are in the United States. The orphanages conditions are horrid. Most of them don’t have clean drinking water. Many don’t have enough beds or blankets to accommodate the many orphaned children. Adoptions coming form the United States are extremely rare because of the boiling turmoil between Afghanistan and the Untied States. But Afghanistan needs all the help it can get. Many orphans die before they reach their teenage years because of the terrible living conditions. Help the children out! Look into Afghan adoptions today!  -Najia

Suicide: A Look at Motives Behind it And Prevention

What causes so many people to commit the ultimate sacrifice and cause so much tragedy? Depression, loss of hope, loss of emotion, all 3? Suicidal thoughts are troubling, especially when accompanied by depression, other mental illnesses, alcohol or drug abuse, or plans for suicide. This situation demands evaluation. The critical distinction is between a person's thoughts regarding death and suicide, and actually wanting to die. When doctors hear that someone wants to die, they refer to these thoughts as suicidal ideation and divide them into 2 categories:

1.       Suicidal ideation can be active and involve a current desire and plan to die.

2.       Suicidal ideation can be passive, involving a desire to die but without a plan to bring about one's death.

Suicidal thoughts can be caused by a sudden tragic event in life, depression, and drug abuse. If you know someone who may be experiencing depression or suicidal thoughts, you should ask them directly about thoughts of suicide. Asking about suicidal thoughts or plans does not put the idea in the person's head. If you are concerned that someone may be depressed or suicidal, then ask them directly. Don’t wait, or it may be too late!  -Linar
